I am thrilled to be here as your half-crazed mom in business!  I say half-crazed in a good way because even though my days are long and often slightly nuts, I love being a mom and a business owner.  Don’t get me wrong – not everything runs smoothly, but life is vibrant and fun, and I feel very fulfilled.

The best part about what I do is sharing my mistakes with the hope that I will help a few other business owners and moms (or dads) while making fun of myself.

Today, I am going to share a little secret with you…A few years ago when I opened my first business (which was about a month before the recession hit, but that is another story), I allowed my husband to do all my paperwork and filing for my LLC.

Although my business was essentially a biz that was going to run side-by-side with my husband’s, not handing my own affairs was a huge mistake!  I shortchanged myself a part of the process.  Although we used a company (and CorpNet was not around yet), I still knew very little about what occurred in the filing process and what the end result meant.

Anyway, in 2010, I still had my original LLC around when I formed my second business.  I know – You are thinking, How Convenient, Easy Peasy, Just run my new biz through the old LLC.  My thoughts exactly.  Actually, not so easy (for me).  Quickly after opening up shop in my home office, I needed to file a DBA (Doing Business As), and decided to do it MYSELF.

Needless to say the form ended back at my office for corrections from the State and I made the whole simple matter a lot more complicated.  Mainly because I was so uninvolved with the original process and I did not want to ask for help, I screwed everything up.

This was a real eye opener for me on how to conduct my business from that point on….

This is also when I met Nellie Akalp of CorpNet, and I promised myself to always be in charge of my own affairs.  This did not mean that I would have to DO everything myself, rather that I must:

A) know what is going on


B) be educated and knowledgable on all my business affairs.

This decision was also made with respect to time.  As moms in business, we cannot do everything ourselves (although we would like to try), but rather delegation is often necessary.  However, delegation DOES NOT mean just handing something off and forgetting about it.  What it does mean is to look at what YOU do best with respect to time and gather help for everything else.

This means a little cash going out, but on the other hand, time is a huge resource, especially for moms.

I found that when it came to handling business affairs like incorporating a business, forming an LLC, filing for DBA’s, and anything in between, I was best served to get assistance.  In the time crunch, my hours were spent better elsewhere, as in writing, being creative, and doing P.R.

I still found it incredibly important to understand what was going on and the process.  Of course, Nellie and her CorpNet Team did just that for me.

Moral of the story:  Know your strengths and when to ask for help, but don’t just sit by idly and allow someone to take over for you.  Make every experience related to your biz a team effort.
