What Are the New Jersey State Payroll Taxes?
New Jersey manages state payroll taxes through the NJ Division of Revenue and Enterprise Services.
- Income Taxes: New Jersey has a progressive income tax depending on the employee’s filing status and income level, up to 11.8%. Employers with employees working or living in Newark and Jersey City must register with those cities and also pay a 1% employer tax.
- Unemployment Insurance (UI): Employers and employees contribute to unemployment insurance with rates ranging from 0.4% to 5.4%. New employers pay a flat rate of 2.68%.
- Disability Insurance (DI): New employers pay 0.5% on employee wages (employees contribute 0.47%). The tax rate for existing employers is based on each employer’s claims history.
- Family Leave Insurance (FLI): New Jersey only requires employees to contribute to the state FLI plan. Employers can provide employees with family leave insurance through a private company, but it cannot cost employees more than the state plan does.
- NJ Workforce Development Partnership Fund: Employers contribute 0.1175%, employees contribute 0.0425%.
